Project 315 . Translation at levels
One paragraph - coordinate with project catalog
Scope
315 . Provide Basic translation for expanded vocabulary at various levels of usage
and various forms for software packages.
- Basic 850 = pure plus international.
- Basic 1000 = Basic850 for word processing ;
- Basic 1500 = Basic1000 +3 (or 4) General special ;
- Basic 2000 = Basic1500 +all Specialty plus Next Step 150 plus
Subsequent 350 plus complex word suffix -able, -ful, -like.
These might be called: basic Basic , media Basic , intermediate Basic , and advanced Basic.
The next steps might be Simple English by adding 320 words from them most frequently used 1000 English words to add fluidity to conversation.
Then VOA Special Engish ( 1480 word vocabulary for news) which adds
474 new words that are not in Simple English [seems high, may be all those not in Basic]
Still looking for vocabulary and derivatives ? -- suggest Hogben's Essential World English of 1400 words ,
Collin's Cobuild of 1700 words ; Richards' Every Mans English ; and
finally Longman's "Defining Dictionary" of 2,075 words and 48 affixes (which is approximately West's "General Service List", but Longman's is easier to find.)
Then full, standard English using local media looking for new words.
and discuss the origins of proper noun place names.
Discussion
850 is defined by Ogden for the learner and international second language applications.
1000 is "as in English" of ALL the 850 words. A computer spell check cannot tell the difference. This includes verb forms.
1500 adds what a finished learner should know with special word lists of three (four) general word lists.
2000 is everything Ogden has ever presented and is his low boundary to standard English.
