Books for Boys and Girls

Children's stories are a clear and ready beginning for Basic English. The greatly noted Dr. Seuss stories were written with a small number of words -- on a challenge from his editor, Green Eggs and Ham has only fifty words -- unfortunately, the need to rhyme covers a number of words that are not Basic, "ham, fox, mouse, etc." Review of some stories on a website of favorite books of a four-year olds, made discovery of "Go, Dog. Go!" uses only six words that are not Basic. To make it Basic, one only need to change 'big dog' to great dog , 'around and around' to round and round , 'fast' to quick ; 'hot' to warm ; 'party' to play (we rearrange the part round party to avoid "meeting for play", and introduce the word many) ; and 'car' that I suggest we keep as a learning of the more common word for the boys and girls than the Basic 'automobile.' Note that the book uses a less common, but regular spelling of "Good by". As a special use of words, one or the other form will work equally well.

Clearly the book is it be used with pictures, but here is the original website (or if not there, here is our copy of it). Changed into Basic, it may be read here in parallel

The idea is not to translate existing children's books, but to make clear that children's books make use of lesser word lists, the very thing Basic does. It is a natural fit to write boy's and girl's books in Basic. The pictures round the story are a great part of the appeal books to children and get the ideas across of the sense of words and the range of senses of words, :'dog', for example ranges from Chihuahuas to St. Bernards.

    •     Make an attempt at writing for boys and girls and we will put your work on view.
    •     We also need books for boys and girls of all years..
    •     There is also a need for learner exercises : word games, puzzles, jokes, riddles, and other learning play. (As a guide, booksthat are rated at the fourth grade level seems to right for learners from ten-years to full grown learners without seeming child-like.)
