Basic English Translation Dictionary
Using a Browser or Text Editor
Without IDP Companion
This is not fancy, it is simply the raw data for IDP Companion, but is
easily used.
This file provides for the translation of standard English words to Ogden's Basic English
Try it online first to see if it is useful to you without the IDP Companion software.
IDP Companion is nicer, but it does not run on Unix.
To USE : Use the "Find" feature to locate the word on this page:
There will be one or more senses; scroll down a few lines to see them.
Copy and paste the sense in your text.
You will, of course, make minor adjustments to the wording to suit your text..
ONLINE
YOUR PC
Frequent users will find it advantageous to download the file, using the "SAVE AS" feature.
Using it from your PC as faster and not subject to internet interruptions.
Hints :
- Create a shortcut icon on your desktop for :
(your path to the folder)/basicdic.html
- Rename the shortcut to "Basic Dictionary" or to "Basic English Translation" or something meaningful.
FIREFOX
To USE :
Select EDIT | Find word on this page:
There will be one or more senses :
Find all senses with Find Next or Cntl G or scrolling down a few lines.
Copy and paste the sense into your text.
You may, of course, make minor adjustments to the wording in your text.
The Firefox "find-box" will remain unobtrusively at the bottom of
the page ready to accept your next request.
Hints:
- To find the word, type a space before the word. This will exclude finding the same spelling included in the body of another word.
- To exclude suffixes, include a space after typing the word.
- To find the word alone, include a leading and a trailing space.
- If you find the word in another word's definitions, it means the word
is Basic and it can be used directly.
- A feature that some people like is to let Firefox begin finding with the first letter
and find the words sooner.
This is controlled by an option
Tools | Options | General : Accessibility ; [ ] begin finding when you begin typing.
IEXPLORER
To USE :
Select menu EDIT, then select Find (on this page)
There will be one or more senses. They can be found with the Find Next key.
Copy and paste the sense in your text.
You may, of course, make minor adjustments to the wording.
There is an option box to select "Find whole words only".
To find derivatives, scroll down a few lines.
For the next Find, return to the top of the page and again
select Edit | Find (on this page).

Set Up :
Download the file http://www.basic-engish.org/down/romanian.txt
Open in your favorite text editor
SAVE AS basicdic.txt
To USE :
Use the "Find" feature of your text editor.
There are many text editors so we do not describe hints for their use.

It will be more efficient to download idp.zip and unzip romanian.txt
Browsers open plain text files as easily as hypertext files.
